One learned Brahmin and a liquor merchant both arrived at Mantralaya to perform the seva to Sri Guru Raghavendra Teertharu. The merchant had a few wishes to be fulfilled for which he did the seva in his own way, while the brahmin was involved in reading of ‘Anuvyakhana’ written by Sri Madhvacharya which happens to be the commentaries on Brahmasutras. The sevas of both the persons continued and very soon Rayaru appeared in the merchant’s dream and fulfilled his wish. Filled with joy, he informs the brahmin of his dream and leaves Mantralaya immediately. Days pass by and the brahmin continues his reading and later he feels that Rayaru fulfilled the merchant’s dream very soon but not his. He gets dejected and decides to pack his baggage and leave. The same night Rayaru appears in his dream and tells him – My child you been doing Parayana of ‘Anuvyakhana’ in my precincts with firm devotion, you were expressive, flawless and smooth and your rendering of our acharyas work was so soothing to my mind that I was immersed in joy. So, I wished you to continue this for long without letting you go and willfully I did not appear in your dream. Rayaru further said- my child as regards to the liquor merchant, there was nothing interesting in him to retain for long and hence I sent him back soon. The learned Brahmin confesses for his wrong decision, remains in Mantralaya for a few more days offering his seva and returns home with his wishes fulfilled.

We never know clearly the workings of Rayaru. We can be sure of the rewards for the devotion.
