Mannargudi is an ancient town in Tamilnadu, about 38 km from Kumbakonam frequented by the Vaishnava saints. This town has the most popular and greatly worshiped Sri Rajagopala temple. The presiding deity is the four-armed Vasudeva with Sreedevi and Bhoodevi on either side. It is a majestic 12 feet idol in the Sanctum Sanctorum. It has 7 Prakaras, 16 temple Towers, 9 Theerthams, 1000 pillar mandapam, 150 feet Rajagopuram, 18 Vimanams also enshrines 24 Gods and Goddesses, thus, making it a magnificent temple complex. It is believed that the Lord here was worshiped by brahma in the Kritha Yuga, Goddess Mahalakshmi in Tretha Yuga, Agni in Dwapara Yuga and several kings and saints like Raghavendra Teertharu in Kaliyuga.

Sri Raghavendra Teertharu had made Purapravesha to this temple town after he becomes the Peetadhipati of the Madhva Samsthana. He along with his entourage spend a few days here. He sang and scripted ‘Sri Rajagopala Stuthi’ consisting of 6 shlokas describing his physical form from the feet to hair locks. Lord Krishna being his Ishtadevatha, he looks at the idol and spontaneously writes the stuthi. Rayaru had visited this temple in his Purvashrama as Venkatanatha, contested in a debate, won the arguments and was facilitated by naming a stone structure as Venkatanatha Mandapam.
