Guru Rayaru arranges for Mrithika

Udagani is an ancient town on the banks of river Tungabhadra in Shikarapur, Shimoga district. It is 40 Km from Honnali. This old town Udagani is popular for being the birth place of the twelfth century poetess Akkamahadevi. This Shaiva pilgrim town is also popular for Sri Guru Raghavendra Tirtha Brindavana consecrated during 1672.

The consecration of Brindavana at Udagani follows the consecration of Brindavana at Honnali. The sacred Mrithika was carried  by a group of brahmins in padayatra from Mantralaya for use in consecration of Brindavana in Honnali. It was carried on their head covering a distance of over 350 km. On Sri Guru Raghavendra Tirtha entering the Brindavana live, the need for mritika’s use did not arise. The brahmins felt the long walk with the Mrithika was futile. To their pleasant surprise Guru Rayaru appeared in their dreams and instructed to deliver the Mrithika at Udagani where the Brindavana was almost ready for consecration. The brahmins were excited to receive the instruction from Guru Rayaru and walked an additional 40 km to complete the mission. This Brindavana carries importance for its location in a Shaiva pilgrim destination  and Guru Rayaru himself communicated and organised for the Mrithika to use in this Brindavana.

This Brindavana stands as one of the few Prachina Brindavanas of Sri Guru Raghavendra Tirtha.
