Appanacharya – The noble soul was offered the Peetha

Appanacharya, is considered one of the most ardent disciples of Sri Raghavendra Tirtha and was intimately associated with him. Guru Rayaru’s stay in Appanacharya house at Bichale for over ten years speaks of the strong bondage between the two. As per Guru Rayaru’s advise, Appanacharya was again married to Ratnabai. As per their wish a boy was born and was named Subbanacharya.

As years passed by, Guru Rayaru told the happy father to take up Sanyasa, and that he would hand over the Peetha of the Madhva Maha Samstahana. He also advised him to give up his habit of chewing beetle leaf and nuts, as this would not be acceptable for the honourable post. Appanacharya refused to accept the offer of Guru Rayaru and said he still wished to enjoy the luxury of materialistic world. Thereafter Guru Rayaru left Bichale to reach Mantralaya. It is said he immediately gave the Sanyasa Deeksha to Sri Venkannacharya, who was his nephew. He was named Sri Sri Yogindra Tirtha and was made the pontiff of The Madhva Maha Samsthana. With this, the ground was set for the Brindhavana praveesha and Appannacharya remained in Bichale. Exactly six days after his return from Bichale, on Shravana Bhahula Bidige in August 1671 Sri Raghavendra Tirtha entered the Brindavana for his Yoga Nidra. Hearing this the shocked Appanacharya rushed to Mantralaya mystically crossing the troubled waters of Tungabhadra. All the way, he sang Ashu Kavitha in praise of the Guru and by the time he reached the Brindavana, it was sealed off and a voice came from the Brindavana saying “Sakshi Haya Syothri Hi” concluding the hymn of Appanacharya.

This was the first miracle witnessed after the Brindavana Pravesha.
