Sri Sri Sumateendra Tirtha succeeded Sri Sooreendra Tirtha in the year 1692 and held the peetha till 1725. It was a very long innings of 33 years and the mutt was called Sri Sumeetendra Mutt synonymous to his name. His Poorvasharma name was Muddhukrishnacharya and he was the grandson of Sri Gururajacharya, the brother of Sri Raghavendra Tirtha in the poorvasharma. He travelled widely in the south including Maharashtra and was patronised by Marathas and Tamil kings.
The then Maharani of Madurai, Mangamma exhibited deep devotion in him and had gifted the idols of Sir Vaikunta Vasudeva, Kalpavruksha and the village Aiyardham.
His audience to Halivanakatte Giriyamma and the eventful divine experience was a major landmark in the life of that Lady Haridasa. The seer could witness lord Balakrishna dancing and swinging in the hands of Giriyamma. He felt blessed watching her palms with rare features.
He had a very close acquaintance with Shahaji the grandson of Chatrapathi Shivaji who had a high reverence for the seer and had given valuable gifts and titles including lands.
His works include Rama Dandaka, Rama Taravali, Sri Yogindra Vijaya, Sri Yogendra Taravali and other literary works. Also to his credit Mantraratnakosha a compilation of mantra tantra, meditation, recitation etc..
He handed over the peeta to Sri Upendra tirtha in the year 1725. His brindavana is in Sri Rangam adjacent to the brindavana of Sri Yogindra Tirtha in the premises of Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt.
