Once Sri Raghavendra Thirtharu accepts mustard seeds offered by a devoted Harijan. It was during Ashada of Chaturmasa period and as a customary practice, mustard seeds are prohibited in food preparations. Overruling the custom, Rayaru hands over the mustard seeds to the cook instructing him to use it in the preparation of the naivedhya to Lord Moola Rama. After completion of the Pooja and naivedhya the Teertha Prasada was served to all the devotes. However, one Srinivas Acharya of Bidrahalli declined to consume it as the prohibited mustard seeds was used in the Prasada. Reacting to this Rayaru gets a special preparation done without Mustard seeds and offers it to that devotee. He consumes it and very negligently collects Mantrakshathe and returns home.
Sri Yadavarya on seeing his brother Srinivasacharya feels the radiance on his face is lost and guesses that his brother has done something wrong. On enquiry Srinivasacharya shares the whole episode that happened with the Prasada. To their shock they see the Mantrakshathe had turned black. Immediately Yadavarya reprimands Srinivasacharya for dishonoring the Prasada of Lord Moola Rama and thereby insulting Rayaru. He instructs him to quickly go back to Rayaru and confess. Accordingly, he comes to Rayaru begging forgiveness for his misbehavior. Rayaru politely makes him seated next to him offers and makes him consume pepper-water mixed with mustard seeds. Srinivasacharya gets a big relief to see the black Mantrakshathe turning orange red in color and goes back home filled with joy.
Great Saints like Sri Raghavendra Thirtharu can overrule and deviate from the customs and practices. Their judgements never go wrong.
