Budhikote is an ancient town dating back to 8th century, a province of the Kings of Bana Dynasty. This town has a fort and many temples dedicated to Lord Venugopala, Lord Hanuman and Lord Sugreeva, however, all in ruined state. This town is located 70 kilometres from Bangalore.
The Mrithika Brindavana of Sri Raghavendra Tirtha is consecrated here in the year 1681, ten years after Guru Rayaru entered the Brindavana at Mantralaya. It is said the Brindavana was consecrated by Sri Lakshmi Manohara Tirtha, the pontiff of Sri Paadaraja Mutt, Mulbagal who held the Peeta from 1670-1708. This Brindavana is located on the banks of the Markandeya Reservoir.
This ancient Brindavana stands sixth in the chronological order after Mantralaya, Bichale, Honnali, Udagani and Tanjore Brindavanas.
Mulbagal is 55 kilometres from Budhikote. In earlier times, Mulabhagal was a thriving learning centre. Also, there are several Lord Hanuman Idols in the region consecrated by Sri Vysya Raja Tirtha and perhaps, the Hanuman Idol inside the fort at Budhikote would have been installed by him. The Mutt is called Kalyavi Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt. The prefix Kalyavi represents the family name of devotees who initiated the temple 339 years back.
