Rayaru opts for Tungabhadra

Sri Raghavendra Thirtharu selects the banks of river Tungabhadra as his final Abode, reasons being several as under –

The river originates from the Sacred Hills of Varaha Parvatha which happens to be the point of penetration of Lord Varaha’s tusk when he was lifting the earth submerged by the devil Hiranyaksha. The water emanating from the penetration point touching the tusk takes form of a mighty river Tungabhadra. Lord Varaha’s grace is inherent in it. Prahalada Maharaj a staunch Bhagavatar had performed several Yagnas on the banks of Tungabhadra River.

As the river Bhadra flows in the Kalasa region, the flow was contained by Sri Madhvacharya who exhibited a miraculous feat by single handedly placing a large granite rock weighing over 50 tons thus engineering the flow of the Bhadra river.

Sri Vadiraja Teertharu in his work, Tirtha Prabandha has made a specific mention of roaring noise of the river Tunga due to its indulgence in removing the sins of devotes bathing in the river.

There is an age-old saying Ganga Snana Tunga Pana meaning its holy dipping in Ganga and holy sipping in Tunga.

The second eventful Bhaghavata Sapthaha after the discourse of Shukacharya to Parikshita Maharaj took place on the banks of Tungabhadra involving Gokarna and Athmadeva, as mentioned in Padma purana. In the backdrop of the above reasons and many unknown truths, Sri Raghavendra Thirtharu opted this location for his Yoganidra.
