The family deity of Thimmanna Bhatta and Gopikamba was Lord Venkateshwara and the son born to them with his blessings was thus named Venkatanatha (Venkatanatha) who later on becomes Sri Raghavendra Tirtha.
Sri Raghavendra Tirtha like all Madhwa Saints used to perform all pujas to Lord Venkateshwara at Tirumala and other destinations. The form of Lord Venkateshwara was always in his mind, well registered, as he used to delve in Hari Chinthane always.
His thought process on Hari was so immense that he initiates to sculpt an idol of Lord Venkateshwara. He identifies a dark black stone – Krishna Shila – and sculpts a moorti of Lord Venkateshwara like the ones in Tirumala, with 4 arms, with shanka, chakra, kati hastha and varapradha. This idol is flawless and can be considered a masterpiece no less than the best of the sculptors. This work of art was completed before he got into sajeeva Samadhi. This idol was consecrated at Mantralaya Kshetra by Rayaru himself. This temple is located on the Brahmin street at Mantralaya. This temple was also the old Mutt where Rayaru used to stay before he enters the Brindhavana.
We observe that great spiritual masters are bestowed with multiple and unusual skills, all for the benefit of mankind. Thousands of devotees throng to this place recalling Rayaru and praying to Lord Venkateshwara.
