The Benagappa Episode.

During the time of Sri Bhuvanendra Teertharu as pontiff, one Sri Benagappa had an exclusive privilege of seeing Rayaru and chatting with him. This was a strange and an unusual boon though. Several devotees use to get answers from Rayaru through him. This went on for several days. The pontiff Sri Bhuvanendra Teertharu developed a wish to have a Darshan of Sri Guru Raghavendra through Benagappa. He expressed the wish to Benagappa for which he consented to make a sincere attempt.

Before dawn, both the pontiff and Benagappa sat in front of the Brindavana to watch Rayaru coming out for his daily dip in Tungabhadra. However, the pontiff missed seeing Rayaru as he is meditating with his eyes closed and Benagappa couldn’t alert the pontiff as Rayaru had instructed him not to speak. After a few minutes, the pontiff opened his eyes to see Rayaru had already gone to the river and they decide to wait for his return and have a glimpse of Rayaru while he enters the Brindavana. Again, the pontiff gets into the meditative state as Rayaru enters the Brindavana. As this is happening Benagappa shakes the pontiff to watch Rayaru entering the Brindavana. The pontiff with a shock opens his eyes to see Sri Raghavendra Teertharu saffron robes and not the face. Maybe he was eligible only for that and that too at the presence Benagappa. They did not make such further attempts as that was the only one chance provided by Rayaru.

The scholars opined capturing the sight of the robes of Rayaru itself is a great privilege in one’s life.
