The Painting of Guru Rayaru

This is a rare piece of art depicting Sri Raghavendra Tirtha  as picturised by an unknown artist. Guru Rayaru is seen engrossed in offering his prayers to Sri Moola Rama placed in an ornamental mantap. The art originally is a line drawing in black and white. The saint is depicted in a side posture sitting to the left side of the lord with the robes covering the head as per the practice followed by the saints.

Guru Rayaru is seen with a body of large frame and a tall personality. He looks very pleasant filled with pure devotion. There are few Sanskrit words appearing in the background – Sri  Moola Ramo Vijayathe, Vijaeendra karabjotha sudheendra vara putrakaha, Sri Raghavendraya namaha, poojyaya Raghavendraya…   The complexion of the saint is not shown as this is black and white art. However it is mentioned in the works of the scholars who lived in his times that guru rayaru’s appearance was like ‘tapta kanchana sankasham’ meaning the radiance of hot boiling gold.

There are no original  paintings or images of Guru Rayaru available for us except for an idol installed at Nanjangud vetted by Sri Raghavendra tirtha.
